Quirky 'star' brooch, Schreiner of N.Y., 1960s.
Quirky 'star' brooch, Schreiner of N.Y., 1960s.
I love the combination of colour and cuts of paste in this fun star brooch. Made by Schreiner in the 60s, it would be an ideal gift to congratulate someone for being a star! Henry Schreiner started the Schreiner Jewellery Company in 1939 and was director until his death in 1954. His daughter and son in law carried the business on until 1977. In the 1950s he made jewellery for Christian Dior. His jewellery is very distinctive for its use of unusual mounts and subtle colour combinations, using the finest quality rhinestones and crystals. He made exceptionally glamorous belts, bib necklaces, unusually coloured baroque brooches (his signature ‘ruffle’ brooch is a classic!), and large pendant earrings, always glamourous. Bette Davis and Marilyn Monroe promoted his jewellery and wore it in various films. His jewellery is widely collected.
