Robert Goossens was a great artist, and one of the last great masters of the golden age of costume jewellery. He is most well known for his magical collaboration with Coco Chanel, commencing in the mid 1950s and continuing through to her death. Together, they created ’Byzantine’ jewels, celebrated for its crosses, and cruxiform brooches. Chanel gave him a freedom of expression , he was able to realise and affirm her wonderful vision - he felt that this collaboration with Chanel was the highest point and recounted many tales of it throughout his later life. He also had a celebrated collaboration with Yves Saint Laurent, creating many of the most fabulous and iconic piece for the couture house. At the beginning, he made the pieces by hand himself, expanding to seven artisans, then with 48 employees in the 1980s and 90s. The atelier continues today, run by his son and daughter.
