This is an epic piece of 19th Century jewellery. I can imagine it in a Pre-Raphaelite painting. It looks like an enormous safety pin. The metal seems to be silver, but as it is not marked, I cannot be certain. For current use it would be perfect to hold a shawl or cardigan together. Another very similar one is also listed.
